As you are considering your new year’s resolutions for 2012, think about sugary drinks. You may believe that they are harmless, but they are a big factor contributing to the obesity epidemic in America. Obesity can cause diabetes, heart disease, stroke, arthritis and some cancers.
The “Pouring on the Pounds” educational media campaign, supported with ARRA dollars and launched by the NYC Dept. of Health and Mental Hygiene, has aimed to alert New Yorkers to the shocking amounts of added sugar in their everyday drinks and the serious health effects from all of the extra calories. Since first airing in 2009, there have been over 800,000 views of these ads on YouTube, and sugary drink consumption is on the decline in New York City. The percentage of adults drinking one or more sugary drinks a day has dropped from 35.9% in 2007 to 30.3% in 2010. Over the next two weeks, we will post the five television ads from the campaign. Click the image above to watch the inaugural ad which ran on December 14, 2009. Fair warning – there’s a “major gross-out factor!”
